VideoTV host Jamie Durie shared new details about how he proposed to singer/songwriter Ameka Jane on Valentine’s Day

House Rules host Jamie Durie is set to reveal he suffered abuse during his childhood and that he left home at age 14.

The former Manpower Australia star turned landscaper and TV personality will feature in a coming episode of ABC’s Brush with Fame and has spoken candidly about his past.

In a preview of the episode, the 50-year-old — who grew up in Tom Price before moving to Queensland after his parents separated — says he left home at a young age to move in with a “mentor”.

“There are traces of those months that still haunt me every now and then but you learn to get on with life,” he said.

“Sadly, that type of abuse affects one in four boys these days, and girls.”

Durie — who has penned more than 11 books — also shared how he used to help his mother “scrub showers” when he was a child.

“I hated her doing that, going to these rich people’s houses, scrubbing their dirty loudly showers,” he added.

Durie’s grandmother is Sri Lankan. She met his English grandfather while he was serving in the air force, before the couple relocated to Australia after World War II.

Durie’s appearance in the March 30 episode comes just weeks after the Seven star confirmed his engagement to model and singer Ameka Jane.

Durie pulled out all the stops to propose, designing a custom engagement ring from Argyle champagne diamonds and green asscher cut sapphires and spelled out “Marry Me” in red rose petals.

“She said YES! Thrilled to announce our engagement. Thank you to my beautiful @amekajane for turning my life upside down,” Durie captioned the post.

“I couldn’t be happier. Magic night for a magic girl.

“Thank you Justin @instinctjewellers for bringing the design to life.”

Durie proposed at sunset by the water and Jane also shared pictures on her Instagram to celebrate the big news.
