Hamish Blake has taken out the top gong at the Logie awards in a strong night for the comedian and TV personality.

Blake beat out Sonia Kruger, Karl Stefanovic, Julia Morris, Melissa Leong, Ray Meagher and Tom Gleeson to win the coveted Gold Logie.

Blake was also the first recipient of the newly titled award for the Most Popular Presenter which was introduced in honour of the late Bert Newton.

The Lego Masters host said winning was an emotional moment for him and almost felt “too big of an honour”.

He said he hoped the award would come to represent the “support and generosity” Newton embodied throughout his life.

Newton’s wife Patti attended the ceremony with daughter Lauren and presented the award on his behalf.

Patti – who in a touching tribute wore a silver necklace with Bert’s name – said she almost couldn’t go through with presenting the award as her husband’s loss was “still very raw”.

But she said it’s what Newton would have wanted as he had loved the Logies.

The television great won 15 Logies during his career, including four Gold Logies, and hosted the awards show 20 times.

The 62nd instalment of the awards were full of glitz and glamour as the stars celebrated the return of the Logies after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Channel 7’s Home and Away extended its lead as the program with the most Logie awards after it won Most Outstanding Drama.

The cast and crew thanked the viewers and the Seven Network for their “unwavering support”.

Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou was hoping for the win on the red carpet and said her son would be watching at home.

The Seven Network also won Most Outstanding Sports Coverage for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympics Games and received nominations for SAS Australia hosted by Ant Middleton, The Voice, RFDS and The Front Bar, among others.

Around 800 guests descended on the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre for the awards night and were treated to live performances from the likes of Jessica Mauboy and Jimmy Barnes.

Proceedings ran slightly differently this year with no official host. Instead, a range of presenters took turns introducing categories including Dylan Alcott, Tony Armstrong, Chrissie Swan and Andy Lee.

The Logie’s Hall of Fame received a new inductee with the entry of Seven Network sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney.

Former AFL player Leigh Matthews presented McAvaney the award with some touching words.

“He always added status and class to any broadcast. It is undeniable that so many of Australia’s most iconic sporting moments have been made much more memorable by the words of Bruce McAvaney.

“He was also searching for the perfect call, well tonight Bruce, this honour is the perfect call,” Matthews said.

The award for Outstanding Actress went to Anna Torv for her role in The Newsreader.
