Albany athletes hit full-throttle with seven gold medals at the State Junior Track and Field Championships

Three Albany-based athletes have become State junior champions, while a fourth club member, from Esperance, also won gold during three days of competition in Perth which culminated on February 22. Between them, the Albany Athletics Club quartet enjoyed a haul of seven gold medals at the 2026 Fuel to Go and Play WA State Junior Track and Field Championships at WA Athletics Stadium. Three of the top gongs went to Ginger Gleeson, while Mason Watkins leapt to a double in the long and triple jumps. Charlotte Mitrovski won gold in the 200m, while Esperance-born Albany member Brody Oliver clinched the 100m gold. Gleeson stormed to victories in the 400m, 800m, and the 400m hurdles. She had a battle with West Track Club’s Mia Shelley in the under-17 400m but toughed it out to take the win in 55.88sec., ahead of Shelley’s 56.83sec. She won the 400m hurdles in 61.81sec., more than eight seconds in front of West Track Club’s Kaycee Ibbotson. In the 800m final, she finished clear of the field, four seconds ahead of silver medallist Hope McHenry, of UWA, in 2min.12.22sec. All three of Gleeson’s winning times were personal bests, and her golden glut caps a season which has included setting four new records in January’s WA Country Championships, and becoming both the 800m national and State schools champion. Watkins, competing in the under-18 age group, made the most of the strong winds to soar to victory in the long jump with a huge final leap of 7.08m. Trailing behind him was Max Baczek, of Perth’s King AC, with 6.33m — despite having even more in the way of wind assistance. Watkins then dominated the triple jump, his last leap of 15.09m giving him the title by more than 3m from his nearest rival, Baczek again, who jumped 12.61m. Mitrovski won the under-16 200m hurdles in 30.17sec., a season’s best, ahead of Joondalup’s Shy’kyla Narrier, who clocked 30.29sec. She also claimed bronze in the triple jump. Oliver produced a season’s best to take the under-16 100m title in 11.33sec. He represented Albany because Esperance did not have a club, but has now moved to Perth to further his athletics career. Watkins has also made the shift to Perth to study as a boarder at Hale School, and the pair now share accommodation. Other Albany medallists were Caleb Benson, who took silver in the under-18 800m in a season’s best 1min. 57.30sec.; Waylan Ciobanu, who jumped 12.97m for silver in the under-17 triple jump; and Makiah Suttie, who took silver in the under-15 100m and bronze in the triple jump.
