Albany church leaders urge locals to learn story behind the Easter long weekend

Albany church leaders say their doors are open this Easter, inviting the community to embrace the weekend as a time for remembrance and celebration while attending a local service.

Tomorrow, on Good Friday, Christians will commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Sunday marks Easter, a celebration of Christ’s resurrection.

Ahead of one of the biggest observances on the Christian calendar, the members of the Albany Church Leader’s Fellowship are encouraging the community to learn about the Easter story.

“Did you know you have an extra long weekend at Easter because of an execution that took place in Jerusalem more than 2000 years ago?” the group said.

“While you’re out catching salmon or camping or just putting your feet up, there will be churches meeting over Easter who worship the man who died.”

The group represents the majority of Albany’s Christian churches, meeting weekly to pray for Albany and support the YouthCare Chaplaincy in Schools program.

“Why did this man die and come back to life?” the group said.

“The Bible tells us that long ago, God promised to send his Son to save us, his death was for us.

“As the verse from the Bible says: ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life’.

“This weekend we’ll be remembering and celebrating the crucified yet risen Jesus at churches across Albany.

“Why not come along to a church service and hear more about this Jesus?”
