Call for local stage talent as first theatre production in Albany Town Hall gets under way

Albany’s Southern Edge Arts is on the hunt for local actors, singers and dancers to audition for a premiere production at Albany Town Hall.

SEA is inviting performers to audition for the debut production, The Ballad of Penelope and Marlin, which is set to be the first theatre performance inside the recently refurbished venue in July.

The company received $95,576 through the State’s WA Theatre Development Initiative to present the show.

The Ballad of Penelope and Marlinis a comical look at life in future lockdown, where robot bees tend to your needs and love begins with an upgrade.

It is about hope, desire and a hive that is home to humans and the last living bee.

The creative team of recognisable Great Southern artists includes David Rastrick, Annette Carmichael, Anne Sorenson, Serena McLauchlan and Nelson Gilmour.

Produced by SEA, a company traditionally known for youth performance, the playis billed as an MA15+ show and will cast adults and mature young people in the roles.

The project aims to showcase the versatility of the town hall as a performance space.

The idea for the script was conceived in 2016, when a team of local artists gathered at Vancouver Arts Center to imagine how life would be in 50 years.

A City of Albany collaborative script-writing residency, named the Futures Project, resulted in the current contemporary musical theatre script.
