New sign to inform whale watchers as part of interpretive trial series

Albany whale watchers can learn about the giant mammals through a newly installed sign at Surfers Beach.

It is one of seven that will pop up across Albany as part of a Port to Point Interpretive Trail.

This particular sign explains the characteristics of humpback, southern right and blue whales, as well as four species of dolphins.

City reserves manager Jacqui Freeman said it was an opportunity to offer an educational experience.

“Marine life, particularly whales and dolphins, are a huge attraction to our coastline and offer an experience to visitors that you can’t always get elsewhere, and means that people are inclined to travel for the unique experience,” she said. “The marine mammal sign is located at Surfers Beach as it is a popular spot for path users to stop and see whales that come into Middleton Beach.”

Ms Freeman said the other six signs on the trail would be at Firth Street, Griffiths Street, Emu Point, the Sound, Middleton Beach, and the port.
