Woman charged for allegedly throwing dog off cliff

A NSW woman who allegedly threw a dog off a cliff in a kennel has been charged with animal torture following a year-long investigation.

Police said a man was bushwalking near Clive Bissell Drive at Mount Ousley, in Wollongong, about 8.30am on January 22, 2023, when he heard a dog yelping.

The man searched the area and found an upside-down kennel at the base of an escarpment with an injured Australian bulldog inside.

Local police and officers from Police Rescue, the Bomb Disposal Unit and the SES launched a rescue operation to retrieve the dog, which appeared emaciated and in poor health.

Police will allege the kennel had been thrown off the cliff overnight.

The dog was taken to a local vet but had to be euthanised due to his poor condition and injuries.

Police seized the kennel for forensic examination and launched an investigation.

About 11am on Friday, a 32-year-old woman was arrested at a home in Horsley, south of Wollongong.

The woman was taken to Wollongong Police Station where she was charged with torture, beating etc, and causing the death of an animal.

The woman was bailed to appear at Wollongong Local Court on May 14.
