South West AFL Watch: Tough day out for Busselton’s Jye Amiss & former HBL Lion Ethan Hughes in 70-point loss

Busselton’s Jye Amiss and former HBL Lion Ethan Hughes have been left disappointed and searching for answers as a lacklustre outing for the Fremantle Dockers saw them fall to GWS Giants by 70 points. The Giants put on a show against a lacklustre Fremantle, winning 16.10 (106) to 5.6 (36) during round 14 of the 2023 AFL season. The disappointing day out at Giants Stadium on Saturday was Fremantle’s second consecutive defeat after previously winning four in a row prior to their bye. The loss is also Fremantle’s biggest losing margin since Justin Longmuir took over as coach three and a half years ago. For key forward Jye Amiss, he was kept quiet by the Giants defenders with no goals on the back of several stand-out performances in previous weeks. The Busselton product racked up five disposals, four marks, two tackles, a score involvement, five pressure acts and an inside 50. Hughes was kept busy within the back half, managing 12 disposals, four marks, three tackles, 10 pressure acts and three inside 50s. Amiss and Hughes were the sole AFL players with ties to the South West to run out during round 14, with West Coast Eagles’ Reuben Ginbey and Brady Hough making the most of a bye, while former Manjimup Tiger junior Marlion Pickett was stood down from Richmond’s line-up in their 13.12 (90) to 11.4 (70) win over St Kilda after he was granted bail following last weekend’s arrest in Perth over burglary allegations.
