Smoke alerts have been issued for parts of Perth’s southern suburbs.

Residents have been warned to shut their doors and windows and turn off air conditioners after two smoke alerts were issued for Dwellingup, Muchea, Perth Hills, Kalamunda, Kelmscott and areas in the Cities of Armadale and Gosnells.

The thick layer of smoke — blanketing parts of Perth Hills, Armadale, Dwellingup, Muchea and Gosnells — is from prescribed burns being carried out by the Department of Parks and Wildlife Service.

The haze is expected to clear by tomorrow morning.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions issued the alerts at 1pm and 3.15pm, warning motorists to turn on their headlights and take care on the roads as the smoke may reduce visibility.

“If the smoke is particularly thick, it is recommended people shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners,” the alerts said.

“People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan.

“People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances.”
