The Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group and Department of Transport Marine Safety will conduct a boating and community information day on Sunday from 10am to 3pm.

The event will promote safety at sea by demonstrating how to correctly set off flares, provide up-to-date information on changes to boating laws, and demonstrate correct radio protocols.

A general map of boat ramps and exclusion zones in the Capes area will be available as will information on various life jackets.

Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group Commander Peter Taylor said the information session was initiated to transform novice skippers into safe skippers.

“With an influx of tourists over the holiday period we have had seven incidents of break downs and one sunken boat,” he said.

“We want to educate people on such things as speed limits, exclusion zones for skiing, and correct protocol in an emergency.”

The information day will also provide an insight to incidents at sea and will be conducted at the Port Geographe Marina Boat ramp.
