The Busselton Festival of Triathlon kicked off on Friday, April 29, with the Busselton Fun Run, featuring distances of 500m, 1.6km and 5km.

As the sun went down at the Busselton Foreshore, hundreds of runners and support crew turned out to start the 21st year of the festival.

The 500m was for all ages, with many parents running with their young children and prams and fancy dressing encouraged. Sisters Ashley, 15, and Emma, 13, Atwell took out the distance.

The 1.6km, or one mile, race saw more experienced short-course runners and talented youngsters compete before the 5km race began.

The highlight of the 5km distance was a sprint finish between professional triathletes Kurt Wesley and Sam Mileham, which saw the latter take the win and the $1000 cash prize.
