Busselton rising star and Cup wins

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Busselton City played a prominent part in the annual South West Soccer Association’s presentation night held in Bunbury last weekend.

Ladies’ Premier League player Asha McClurg won the rising star award as the best under-18 girls’ player.

Asha had a memorable season, winning her club’s fairest and best trophy as well as gaining selection in the WA under-18 schoolgirls’ team.

Asha was marked by her club as a quick-thinking player who possesses superb ball control and an outstanding technique in a dead-ball situation.

Her 35m free kick against Eaton-Dardanup earlier this season was noted as one of the best goals scored at Churchill Park this season.

Asha will also play in the Pacific School Games in Adelaide in December.

She is following in the footsteps of her father, who played in the National Soccer League with Brisbane Lions, and her younger brother, who plays in the youth State League team South West Phoenix.

Meanwhile, the men’s Premier League performed well, receiving the South West Cup after defeating Bunbury Dynamos 2-0 in the final.

Busselton finished in fourth place with injuries to key players affecting Tristen Carrol’s side at crucial times during the season.

The team went into the final as underdogs, despite defeating league champions Bunbury United in the semifinal.

Busselton were des-erved winners on the day courtesy of goals scored by Mike Newell and Martin Ryan.
