Busselton squads crack State league finals shortlist
Sunday saw the last of the regular season matches for both the Busselton women’s and men’s Western Australian Volleyball League teams.
Both teams travelled to Perth to play their respective counterparts from the Southern Cross Volleyball Club at Loftus Arena.
The men defeated their opponents to take top spot on the table and while the women did not get the win, they had done enough during the regular season to see them sit in the top four and ensure a shot at the podium.
This is a huge achievement for the women’s squad as this is the first year the Busselton Club has fielded a team in the Perth-based women’s WAVL competition.
Under the coaching of Brett Lewington, the women have grown stronger in their attacking, while also seeing marked improvements in their defence.
The men have also seen a dramatic difference from prior years with a lot of their younger players, having had a full year’s experience of the WAVL competition under their belts, stepping up and making an impact for the team.
The team has also seen change from mixed results throughout the prior season, to lose only one match in 2020.
Semifinals take place this Sunday at Warwick Stadium, Perth, the women will be taking on Reds at 10am and the men will be playing Reds Juniors at midday.
The Busselton local indoor competition begins finals this Thursday at Geographe Leisure Centre.
