Busselton women conquer carnival
Triple M Busselton City women’s team began their 2019 season in fine style by winning the Football Margaret River Carnival over the weekend.
With coaches Therese Charlton and Rob Gibbons leading the way, Busselton City have been particularly active during the summer months with the accomplished trio of Sami Ryan, Estelle Dragstra and Keely Milner rejoining the club with Ashleigh Charlton (Dynamos), Emily Killick (Mandurah City) and Alex Jordan (Margaret River).
Busselton quickly hit their stride On Saturday with wins over South Perth, Dynamos and Peel.
Their defence, led by Ryan and Milner, proved to be particularly formidable in that they did not concede a goal in any of those matches.
With a place in the finals already assured, Busselton took their foot off the pedal in their first game on Sunday, losing to Port Kennedy 2-0 before defeating neighbours Margaret River in the semifinal which proved to be one the games of the carnival.
Busselton youngster Nicole Rogue continued her scoring exploits to get her side into a penalty shoot-out after 1-1 full-time score. Goalkeeper Ashleigh Charlton showed considerable agility to save a Margaret River penalty before the experienced Dragstra calmly scored to get her side into the finals.
Facing Port Kennedy again, Busselton quickly gained the ascendancy through a goal from Killick before player of the carnival Therese Charlton controlled proceedings until the final whistle.
Both the men’s and ladies Busselton Premier League teams will now participate in the upcoming South West Soccer Association’s Pioneer Cup.
