A new aged care facility for people over 65 in Dunsborough has welcomed its first residents this week ahead of its official opening date next month. Independent living residents moved in to Capecare Dunsborough’s new $37.5 million development from Monday after years of lobbying by Capes residents for more aged care options in the area. With an 80-bed residential care facility and 21 self-sufficient dwellings, the new construction is the first of its kind in the South West town. Built by Perkins Builders in collaboration with Gary Batt & Associates Architects — the development will also welcome its first aged care residents from August. Capecare is a not-for-profit company serving the needs of people in the Capes region and chief executive Elizabeth Hogarth said it was exciting to see the project get to this point. “With COVID on the back-burner the whole time, it has been tense,” she said. “But the fact that we have managed to stick to the deadline we committed to with the apartment people, it has been the result of a team effort with Perkins and the project team.” Ms Hogarth said she was looking forward to finalising the project in the next two months and welcoming people to an open day. “We are so happy with the finished project and glad the residents are too,” Ms Hogarth said. Complimentary allied health services for residents such as occupational therapy and physiotherapy will be a highlight of the new establishment, which is now also home to the Dunsborough Country Women’s Association. New independent living resident Annie Palmer moved in on Monday and said her new home was exactly what she wanted. “It’s lovely. We are so impressed by the quality and the support from Capecare during the move,” she said. Large-scale exterior murals by Perth artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers are also a prominent part of the new development which will be staffed, managed and led by Dunsborough locals. Vasse MLA Libby Mettam said the new facility would be a “huge asset” for the rapidly growing Dunsborough community. Public open days will be held on July 29 and 30, from 2pm.
