Charity frothing at beer sales figure
A special charity beer has helped tip a South West cause over the $75,000 fundraising mark.
Out of the Blue Summer Ale, produced by Rocky Ridge Brewing Co., was released in January as a fundraiser for Darren’s Ride, a local organisation which raises money on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA and MND Australia.
Darren’s Ride pays tribute to Darren Whitby, an avid Capes surfer, who died in 2015 from the incurable disease aged 50.
His wife, Kirsten, heads the organisation, which was created in 2016 initially as a charity bike ride. The organisation has expanded to incorporate other initiatives and remembers Mr Whitby’s “ride through life” and his love of riding the waves.
The first release of Out of the Blue has raised more than $9000 for the cause and the beer will be relaunched every summer.
Ms Whitby said she was thankful to Rocky Ridge for helping Darren’s Ride crack $75,000.
She paid tribute to Darren’s friend and colleague Margaret Hitching for inspiring the beginning of the organisation with the inaugural ride from Perth to Busselton.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped us in our legacy to help others on behalf of Darren,” she said.
Ms Whitby said Darren would have loved the beer and adored the packaging.
The beer’s logo features Darren’s dog, Darcy, a blue heeler with one blue eye, riding a surfboard.
