Community support needed to keep Foodbank service in Vasse

Vasse Lions Club is calling for community support to provide low-cost essentials to those struggling in Vasse, with concerns poor turnout may result in residents needing to travel to Busselton or Bunbury to benefit from a vital service.

Secretary Trish Robinson said the club has helped facilitate Foodbank sessions over the last year in response to community demand, but the service is not sustainable unless it is utilised and donations are made.

“Many people are not linking in because they don’t understand how it works (or) they’re embarrassed and feel judged,” she said.

“Some just don’t know about it, and so it is as simple as you don’t need to make phone calls, you don’t need a healthcare card, anybody who has a need can do it, you’re more than welcome to come on down.”

Mrs Robinson said Foodbank offers low-cost food and essentials available for purchase and $30-50 can buy several meals, which can make a difference for those in need.

‘We have a lot of multicultural people living in Vasse, who are not linking into these services because they don’t think that they can, because they’re on visas and things like that,” she said.

“You just show up, get in line, fill out a simple form, have some ID and then you can shop.

“Bins for donations of non-perishable food and essentials are located in the area and any other support is welcome.”

Foodbank WA provides the service to struggling families across the State and relies on community support to provide the produce and facilitate the sale of items to Vasse with the help of volunteers.
