Culture in focus for Kalumburu
Women from the South West and the Kimberley have joined forces to create a 2019 calendar to raise money for entrepreneurs in Kalumburu.
Yallingup-based photographer Freedom Garvey-Warr and Margaret River’s Clare Wood have collaborated with women in remote Aboriginal communities through the Enterprise Learning Project and created the Kalumburu Photography Collective.
Wood said she worked in the East Kimberley region for many years and was approached by the Tramulla Strong Women’s Group in Kalumburu, to support their aspirations of a micro-enterprise.
“A process of mapping the communities’ hopes and dreams, uncovered that a group of women wanted to learn photography and share the unique culture of Kalumburu whilst also learning skills in small business,” she said.
“This evolved into a wonderful collaboration between Kalumburu community, ELP manager Susannah Wallman, Freedom and myself.
The Kalumburu Photography Collective was established after the delivery of three intensive skills workshops held in the community in 2017, which were facilitated by myself and Freedom in Kalumburu.”
A number of women from Kalumburu were in Yallingup in March this year to refine their photography skills, and many of the photographs feature in the fundraising calendar.
Garvey-Warr said the project was close to her heart, having grown up in the North West.
“I love being a visual storyteller,” she said.
“For me, it is creating a time capsule of moments to remember the little things,” she said.
“I take pictures because honest connections between people tell an incredible story.”
ELP assists with many projects in Kalumburu, including setting up a community op-shop and a men’s carving project.
“The aim of our projects is to promote economic empowerment as well as health and well-being,” Wood said.
Profits from the sale of the calendar will be reinvested to support the micro-enterprise.
