Dunsborough and Busselton Rugby Club start 2024 season with championship grade side defeating Perth Irish

Saturday was nothing short of thrilling for the Dunsborough and Busselton Rugby Club as they continued their ascent in WA rugby with a stellar away win against Perth Irish. Fielding both a community grade and championship grade side for the first time in their 28-year history, players for the latter side showed remarkable spirit and determination to clinch a 13-10 victory in a nail-biting encounter at Belmont. Transitioning from winning the community State competition in their inaugural attempt to competing with two teams at a higher level in the championship was no small feat, but with an off-season of robust recruitment and the return of some familiar faces, the club arrived in full force, ready to make its mark. Despite a slow start and the challenges of adjusting to a higher level of competition, the Dungbeetles’ championship grade side gradually found their rhythm as the match progressed, led by newly appointed captain Chris McLean. They were trailing 10-0 early on but the away side showcased exceptional line speed and first-up tackling throughout the game. A penalty kick from 2023 player of the season Dan Watt kept the Dungbeetles within striking distance of their opponents. With time ticking away and another penalty conceded due to ill-discipline from Perth Irish, McLean and his men seized the moment. Opting for a quick tap, the ball was swiftly sent wide. In his debut game, Josh Southwell showcased his speed and agility as he sliced through two defenders, sprinting untouched to the try line under the posts. Dan Watt sealed the deal with a successful conversion, securing a memorable win for the South West side. Former player and new coach Brendan Thomson emphasised the importance of defence. “Pre-season, the numbers have been strong and the spirit of the boys has been brilliant,” he said. “Defence is what wins you games, getting up off the floor to help your mates out. That’s what this club is built on.” The community grade side had fought hard earlier in the day but were defeated. However, rugby was undoubtedly the winner of the day. The community and championship sides will be playing at home against Bunbury Barbarians on Saturday. Spectators are invited to join in from 1.30pm, with the championship game starting at 3pm. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day.
