A fire at William Barrett and Sons funeral home has closed Bussell Highway in Busselton.

The blaze began about 6am with Department of Fire and Emergency Services alerted at 6.45am.

Three DFES appliances attended the fire including Busselton, Vasse and Dunsborough fire brigades which were able to contain the fire by 8.42am.

A DFES spokeswoman said the fire had been contained to the garage with hotspots and roofing continuing to be monitored.

The fire is expected to have caused about $500,000 worth of damage.

The cause of the fires is yet to be determined.

Bussell Highway is still closed with vehicles diverted via Abbey and Bovell streets.

William Barrett and Sons director Taryn Barrett said due to the fire three funerals to be held today would be moved to a different location.

“We can confirm that the fire has been contained and the mortuary and chapel have not been affected. We are making contact with all families we are currently serving,” she said.

“The funeral for Mr Brian Dyson will be held at 11am today (Friday) at the St Mary’s Family Centre. The location for the funeral of Mr Ron Baker today (Friday) at 2.30pm will be at the Busselton Yacht Club. The funeral for Mrs Marlene Robson will be held at the Busselton Cemetery today (Friday) at 11am.”

King Street resident Chris Cull said she heard the fire alarm about 6am and walked outside to see thick black smoke.

“It smelt like tires and the fire engines came quickly. I could hear them cutting the doors to get in because it was all locked up,” she said.
