A South West gourmet gelato company stands proud having once again won a slew of medals at the 2021 Perth Royal Food Awards. Gelato Buonissimo’s signature wildflower honey, rosemary and orange zest gelato gained yet another gold medal at the prestigious annual awards along with a handful of silver and bronze medals for its other flavours. The medals come in the wake of Buonissimo’s major trophy win for the same signature flavour at the WA Dairy Product Competition earlier this year. Proving locally sourced gourmet artisan flavours are key to producing quality products, the family-run business is going from strength to strength. Daniela Smith, pictured, who has taken over the sales and marketing side of the business, said the awards further solidified the busniess’ standing in the industry. “Unlike the dairy competition, the Perth Royal Food Awards meant our gelato went up against only gelatos rather than ice-creams,” she said. “This meant the judges had a more refined palette and looking for specific gelato indicators rather than ice-cream, so it’s a real accomplishment for us to do so well. It reinforces the idea that people want to taste something different and validate what we’re doing. “We believe that real food, real ingredients, authentic products still have a place in the industry, and we’re here to fill that space.” The award-winning gelato family business celebrated alongside other South West vendors to achieve success at the annual awards, including Gabriel’s Chocolate and The Margaret River Chocolate Company.
