Two local young surfers will receive a free trip to the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre in NSW after winning the under-14s events in the WA Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps.

Macklin Flynn (Cowaramup) won the under-14s boys comp and Zali Hewson (Margaret River) was champion of the under-14s girls when competing against some of Australia’s best junior talent last weekend at Trigg Beach.

Macklin overcame Otis North (Yallingup), Brock Launders (Margaret River), Jake Hagan (Geraldton) and Ariel Hutchinson (Whale Beach, NSW) to claim the title.

He scored 12.56 from a possible 20, just defeating Brock in a tightly contested heat.

“Going to the HPC has to be one of the best prizes you could possibly win,” Macklin said.

“The Surfer Groms Comp is one of my favourite and I’m stoked to have won.”

Zali Hewson backed up a good first day with a comprehensive win in the under-14s girls, posting 17.34 from a possible 20, the highest combined total of the day.

“I’ve had a really great summer surfing and having fun,” Zali said.

On the first day Otis claimed the Air Asia Air of the Day by stamping a clean aerial rotation which earned him a near-perfect 9.17.

Remy North (Yallingup) also had an impressive day, posting a near perfect 9.07 on his way to a win in the under-12 boys’ final.
