Hockeyroos dream for Strikers star
Fresh from premiership glory in the Bunbury District Hockey League, Maddison Fenwick is now dreaming of playing for the Hockeyroos.
The Boyanup Hockey Club Striker from Busselton was the Busselton Freight Services Rising Sports Star for June.
Scoring from a short corner in the dying stages of Wednesday night’s grand final the Boyanup Years 9-12 girls won the grand final 1-0 over Town South.
The big stage was not foreign to Fenwick who played in the WA under-15 girls’ hockey grand final against NSW at the national championships. WA were narrowly defeated that day despite Fenwick’s strong tournament where she scored eight goals.
Fenwick, a 15-year-old attending Georgiana Molloy Anglican School, also plays against women in the South West Hockey League where she said she was most challenged.
“It’s a really strong competition and I love the challenge,” she said. “Playing with the Strikers helps me develop because I can ask them what I need to work hard on and get a lot of feedback.”
Fenwick said she was inspired to follow her three favourite Hockeyroos Jane Claxton, Georgia Wilson and Mariah Williams.
“They know where the back of the net is, work really hard and never give up,” she said.
A gruelling training and playing schedule of six sessions per week plus extra fitness work has motivated Fenwick to study physiotherapy at Curtin University after high school.
“Playing for Strikers has developed my maturity and Mum has been amazing getting me to games in Bunbury,” she said.
“Sometimes we giggle and sometimes there’s tears but we always talk about my games and how I can improve.”
