Jetty Crew graduates in style at Shelter

The 2023 Busselton Jetty Crew have celebrated their graduation from the program at Shelter Brewing with family members, program sponsors and jetty staff. During the past year the crew has taken part in workshops and excursions featuring local experts. The six participants gained valuable experience in leadership, environmental stewardship and business skills. Activities they took part in included whale monitoring research, event management and beach clean-ups. As a reward for their dedication to the program, participants were able to complete their open water dive certificate and a learn to sail course with local providers. The Jetty Crew youth leadership program runs from May to December for people aged 15 and 18. This is the sixth year it has been held. The program is managed by the Jetty Environment Foundation as part of its commitment to education and is fully funded by local sponsorship. Since 2021 the program has been endorsed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority, which enables graduates to include their Jetty Crew learning towards their WA Certificate of Education and have the achievement reported on their WA Statement of Students Achievement. Lily Treasure, a 2023 Jetty Crew member, said the program helped her gain confidence, independence and a good work ethic. “The Jetty Crew program is a great gateway into the workforce and community involvement,” she said. “I recommend this program to anyone looking to build friendships and gain new skills.” Busselton Jetty Inc environment officer Viktoriya Hlamazda said the program had had some outstanding results. “From our past participants, around 25 per cent of the graduates go on to study science-related subjects, such as marine biology, at university,” she said. Jetty Crew co-ordinator Jacqueline Bullard said the program aimed to give the crew a variety of new skills and opportunities to grow their confidence and to take on new challenges while working together as a team. “Each year we endeavour to add variety and new activities to continue to grow the program,” she said, “This year was our biggest program yet.” Applications for the 2024 Jetty Crew can be found at busseltonjetty.com.au/jetty-crew.
