Local focus in bid to monitor beaches
Local community members have been invited to help collect data about WA coastlines as part of a new beach-monitoring solution.
Researchers from the University of Western Australia collaborated with the Peron Naturaliste Partnership and launched the solution in the South West.
Photo-monitoring points that allow beachgoers to capture and upload identically framed pictures of the coastline have been installed at nine beaches between Rockingham and Busselton as part of the CoastSnap WA initiative.
UWA Oceans Graduate School research associate Dr Michael Cuttler said this would help combat the severe lack of data available to researchers.
“The data gathered from community members through the initiative will supplement existing coastline information, boosting our capacity to make more informed scientific decisions,” he said.
Visitors to the beaches can aid researchers in collecting data by visiting the CoastSnap WA web portal or by using their smartphone to scan a Quick Response code at participating beaches.
