Community groups from Busselton and Dunsborough were among the top three groups from across WA to receive an RAC grant last weekend in Perth.

The Dunsborough Progress Association’s project to redevelop the front of the Telstra block on Naturalist Terrace, Dunsborough received the most votes from RAC members, while Building Busselton’s Busselton Laneway Project came in third out of about 30 entries.

The grants are part of the RAC’s $50,000 Connecting Communities Fund, which is aimed at bringing “life to local spaces across WA”.

This is the second year of the fund, with the DPA awarded money last year for its Djiljit Mia Park.

The Building Busselton Project aims to create a series of murals along the theme of My Busselton in Opal Lane in the heart of the city’s CBD between Kent Street and Prince Street.

Artists will be asked to choose a theme from those identified from community input, and provide a concept.

Each of the concepts will be assessed and six will be chosen with the aim that they complement each other.

“The murals will create a vibrant and active laneway, making this a beautiful space that everyone can enjoy,” Building Busselton’s Lisa Skrypichayko said.

The artworks will be added to the City of Busselton Urban Art Trail, which has more than 50 artworks noted within the City.

The trail will be available online by the time the Busselton Laneway Project is completed.
