Police to take part in shave for cause

Busselton catering company Burnt Ends Smoking Co and the Busselton police will be among those raising money for the Cancer Council at a World’s Greatest Shave event at Darleen’s tomorrow.

Busselton policemen First Class Constable Blair Fisher, Senior Const. Brian Legge, First Class Const. Bryn Papalia and Const. Arlen Mersch will participate in uniform, with a barbecue, fundraising games and drink specials available at 5.30pm.

Const. Fisher said cancer had affected his family, with both his grandmothers dying of different cancers and one of his best friends at school had been diagnosed with leukaemia.

“If you can spare your hard-earned, there’s probably not a better ... cause, cancer effects everyone in some way or another whether it is friends or family,” he said.

This community event is the second in an attempt for a stronger community policing presence after the highly successful Cops v Kids basketball game.

“It’s nice to get involved with the community for a bit of fun and show a different side of us, that we are human too,” Const. Fisher said.

Leukaemia Foundation community supporters team lead Felicity Renner said it was a fantastic initiative from Burnt Ends Smoking Company and Darleen’s to get the police involved.

“Every day another 35 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer — the more support the better,” she said.

Burnt Ends co-owner Eileen Booth said she didn’t know whether to be excited or scared.

“The girls are pretty nervous, hopefully we can reach our goal of $5000,” she said.

Cinco Boutique Hair owner Kendal Drake and her staff will provide expert clipping for the event, donating their time to support the Leukaemia Foundation.

A Busselton Dunsborough Times reporter will also be participating in the event.
