Remembrance Day: Busselton community remembers fallen soldiers in moving service by local RSL sub-branch

As the world acknowledges the day World War I ended in 1918 more than a century ago, the Busselton community turned out to remember those who gave their lives in battle in a moving service. Hundreds of Busselton residents gathered at Victoria Square on Friday morning to acknowledge the Australian and New Zealand lives lost in battle. In the midst of wreaths being laid at the cenotaph by various community members, schools and organisations, Busselton RSL sub-branch president Glenn Woodward gave an address about the history and significance of Remembrance Day, formerly known as Armistice Day. The service also included rousing renditions of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda and The Soldiers Last Letter by local musician Mike Wilkinson. Following the service, Mr Woodward said he was grateful to the Busselton community which continued to acknowledge Remembrance Day by attending the ceremony. “I was quite surprised by the turnout considering it was a Friday, but we always get good crowds and they get bigger every year,” he said. “It’s a significant day and it was really lovely to see so many people come and acknowledge it, including many young people becoming more interested in it which was lovely to see. “The weather held off so that certainly helped. “We’ve still got conflicts going on in the world, but let’s hope that things will get better in the future.”
