South West man to embark on epic bike ride to raise funds for cancer

A Busselton apprentice has set a physical challenge for himself to ride 2000km between Busselton and Perth over eight days, aiming to raise $5000 for cancer research. Cameron Anderson, a mechanical fitting apprentice from Vasse, said the ride to Perth would start in Busselton on September 20 before riding back to Busselton the next day. The catch? He plans to do this four times over to cover about 2000km in just over a week. “I see other people doing crazy things like running across Australia, like Nedd Brockmann, and I thought why can’t I do it myself and test the body and test the mind out?” he said. “I’m inspired by them, and also, just while I’m here, I might as well give it a shot. “Not many people attempt to do something like this. And I thought, why not?” The 22-year-old said he had participated in triathlon events and an ironman event he couldn’t complete due to injury. Motivated by not finishing that event, he has his sights set on the next big thing. “The last ironman I done in December, even though I didn’t complete it, I had about 14km left of the run and my knee was pretty sore,” he said. “But since then I’ve done an ultra-marathon. That kind of changed my mindset a fair bit on what more I can actually do. “I now use that failure as a stepping stone into figuring out what the mind is capable of so I thought I’d reach out to the Perth Children’s Hospital because my nan had cancer and died from it a few years ago — back in 2019. “That’s what kind of started this whole thing of pushing myself and seeing what’s out there. I thought it’d be a good idea to team up with the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation. The funding will go towards the hospital’s sport rehabilitation program.
