South West top recyclers
Last week was National Recycling Week, and South West residents proved savvy at sorting their rubbish, with the area recorded as having the highest regional Containers for Change returns in the State.
In the first 30 days of the scheme, South West residents dropped off more than 2,848,016 containers
The number of returns across WA stand at more than 27.8 million.
Western Australia Return Recycle Renew chief executive Tim Cusack said litter reduction and environmental outcomes were a big part of the scheme.
“People are concerned about recycling and sustainability — the scheme guarantees that the material is recycled,” he said.
“I think people are really interested in that environmental perspective.”
Mr Cusack urged people to separate containers at home and remove the lids before returning them. “A huge congratulations for the support of the scheme so far — the South West efforts have already had multiple benefits,” he said.
