The City of Busselton celebrates NAIDOC week by holding an Elders lunch

The week-long NAIDOC celebration across Australia recognises and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme is ‘For our elders’, which recognises the huge part elders have played and continue to play in communities. Honouring this year’s theme the City of Busselton held multiple events throughout the week, including an Elders lunch. Around 20 of the regions Elders gathered at the Youth and Community Activities Building located on Busselton Foreshore, to enjoy a lovely lunch, to eat some cake and to test their luck in a raffle full of winter goodies! “The City created a Reconciliation Action Plan in 2015 and is committed to building respect and forming strong relationships with the Aboriginal community,” said the City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley. The City recently appointed a new role of an Aboriginal Community Development Officer, which has been filled by Thelma Harris. “Thelma’s appointment will help the city build relationships with the community, we look forward to continuing to work on projects that raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and stories and increase Aboriginal employment.”
