Winery rides brewing wave
Renowned Margaret River winery Aravina Estate has welcomed more palate diversity on its grounds with the launch of a new surf break-inspired taphouse.
Headed by the estate’s experienced winemaker and head brewer, Brad Hutton, the taphouse will showcase the winery’s new beer label, 8Waves Brewing Co, reflecting eight famous surf breaks in the region.
The launch comes just as the winery kicks off its annual and popular 15 Days of Summer event at the end of December, welcoming visitors to relax and revel in the warmer weather.
Dr Hutton, pictured, said the launch was an exciting opportunity and would provide a nice space for people to enjoy a casual drink.
“It is a pretty exciting little space they’ve got down there, it is all downstairs and spills out onto the lawns with the playground,” he said.
“It is pretty exciting; exciting for me to, to be able to make a few beers.”
Born and bred in Wilyabrup, a trip to the west coast of the US and a passion for beer led the accomplished winemaker to add brewing to his list of talents, first pouring his own beers at Aravina last year.
“They have got so many amazing breweries and it is really ingrained over there,” he said.
“Us winemakers, we don’t normally sit back and smash a Cab Sav at 5 o’clock on Friday afternoon, we are normally having a beer, so I have always been interested in beer.” Dr Hutton said the event would be a nice way to celebrate summer.
“They had it last year as part of the 10th anniversary and it went really well,” he said.
“We have got music happening every day, we have got the cellar door there and food — it should be a nice casual time for everyone.”
During 15 Days of Summer people will soak in the sun as they enjoy wine, beer, and cider, listen to local live music, and eat freshly shucked oysters.
The free event is on from December 27-January 10.
