Premier Mark McGowan will get his first injection of the AstraZeneca vaccine tomorrow as over-50s become eligible for the immunisation program for the first time.

The 53-year-old is set to be joined by Deputy Premier Roger Cook, 55, tomorrow morning to receive their initial doses.

“We’ve both waited our turn and I want to encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves and get the COVID vaccine when it’s their turn,” Mr McGowan said.

“The vaccine has been tried and tested and we owe it to the WA community, our family and friends to ensure we get vaccinated to protect ourselves and others.

“We’ve seen the ups and downs the pandemic has had and the vaccine is one of our lines of defence. Roll up for WA and get vaccinated.”

Updated national health advice last month stated the Pfizer jab was preferred for those aged under 50, after rare cases of blood clotting in younger people were linked to AstraZeneca.

The Premier previously declared he would not skip the jab queue to set an example for others in the community.

Vaccinations for over-50s will be limited to State Government-run facilities until May 17, when GPs will begin administering jabs.

There are currently two mass public vaccination clinics at the Claremont Showgrounds and on George Wiencke Drive near the Perth Airport. Clinics in Joondalup and Kwinana are expected to open later this month.
