LATEST COVID-19 DEVELOPMENTS:

*Half of Australia's population aged 16 and above has now been vaccinated against coronavirus seven months after the rollout began.

*Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the federal government is working on bringing back international students and skilled workers to Australia.

*NSW reported 1043 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm on Thursday and eleven deaths, 10 of whom were unvaccinated.

*NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said authorities were seeing "pleasing declines" in case numbers but everyone needed to do their part to "hold the course".

*Victoria has recorded 733 new COVID-19 cases, including a man who attended an anti-lockdown protest, and another death, as the state prepares to roll out the Moderna vaccine.

*Melburnians have been urged not to flock to football heartlands and other supporters' homes over AFL grand final weekend, with the city's nightly curfew to remain in effect.

*Two vaccinated staff have tested positive for COVID-19 at a Canberra retirement community as the territory records 19 new cases.

*ACT Chief Health Officer Kerryn Coleman flagged additional cases at the village, both in staff and residents which will be included in Saturday's numbers.

*Queenslanders have been told it is too soon to provide any clarity on whether its borders will reopen in time for the holidays as official figures show more than 3100 people are waiting on applications for exemptions to enter the state.

*A group of Queenslanders will take to the streets on Friday night to protest against opening the state border prematurely.

*Tasmania will reveal its reopening plan in mid-October and will also publicly release coronavirus modelling on which it is based as the premier announces he wants the state to be 90 per cent fully vaccinated by December.

AUSTRALIAN VACCINATION NUMBERS:

*There have been 26,130,313 doses administered in the national COVID-19 vaccination rollout up to Thursday, including 347,796 in the previous 24 hours.

*Of the total, 15,033,344 have been administered by the Commonwealth (an increase of 219,229 in the previous 24 hours).

*14,082,884 have been issued in primary care (+211,335) and 950,460 in aged and disability facilities (+7,894).

*11,096,969 have been administered by the states and territories, including 128,567 in the previous 24 hours.

AUSTRALIAN CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Australia reported 1795 local cases on Wednesday: 1043 in NSW, 733 in Victoria and 19 in the ACT. One interstate-acquired case was also recorded in NSW.

* Two overseas-acquired cases was reported: one in WA and in NSW.

* The national death toll is 1206: NSW 333, Victoria 837, Tasmania 13, WA 9, Queensland 7, SA 4, ACT 3. (Two Queensland residents who died in NSW have been included in the official tolls of both states).

GLOBAL CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Cases: at least 230,602,000.

* Deaths: at least 4,728,000.

* Vaccine doses administered: at least 6,021,823,000.
