RECAP: The latest COVID-19 updates from day two of the long weekend lockdown

Many West Australians have marked Anzac Day from their driveways for the second year after Perth and the Peel was placed into a third COVID-19 lockdown on Friday.

Yesterday, the WA Health Department revealed there had been a new case of community spread — a man in his 40s who contracted the virus after visiting a Kardinya restaurant which was revealed as one of the State’s exposure sites.

As of this morning, the latest outbreak now includes three cases — the Victorian traveller who contracted COVID at the Mercure Hotel, a dental worker friend he stayed with in Kardinya and yesterday’s new case of community transmission.

Speaking before the new case came to light, Premier Mark McGowan yesterday said there were hopes the lockdown would not last beyond midnight on Monday but that the State was “not out of the woods”.

Mr McGowan has called for more West Australians to get tested, despite long queues at Perth’s COVID clinics and warned it was still “early days”.

“We need many more tests to be done, this is crucial to give us the data and certainty to look beyond this lockdown,” he said.

“Please get tested. If you have been one of the exposure locations or even if you are feeling unwell, please go get tested.”
