New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ready to name date for trans-Tasman bubble with Australia

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will reveal her start date for the long-awaited travel bubble with Australia on April 6. “It is close,” Ms Ardern said on Monday. “We know what it would mean to people. But we also know that many New Zealanders are nervous. “We do expect to be in a position to open up the bubble soon.” Health Minister Greg Hunt said he hoped Australian residents would be flying to New Zealand in coming weeks, with travel exemptions no longer required for the trip across the Tasman. “Australia is ready for any potential travel bubble with New Zealand,” he said. “We have facilitated so that Australians can leave Australia if and when New Zealand is at a point where they feel comfortable to receive Australians without quarantine.” At the moment, quarantine would still be required upon arrival. The Australian Government on Monday updated emergency legislation to allow anyone who had been in Australia for two weeks or more to travel directly to New Zealand. Ms Ardern indicated she would open New Zealand to Australia “on a State-by-State” basis. Before two-way travel could start, six conditions must be met, including a cemented response plan by New Zealand should Australia record an outbreak and a contact tracing system that can work across the two countries. Health Department Secretary Brendan Murphy said New Zealand had “expressed concerns” over the discrepancies between States and their approach to border closures. Professor Murphy said only the Eastern States were willing to “stick together” and adopt a “common approach”. It comes after WA Premier Mark McGowan made clear he would not hesitate to lose the State’s border at any time if there were outbreaks in other States. “We know we have to give New Zealanders certainty,” he said. New Zealanders are currently allowed to come into Australia without quarantining, but the Morrison Government has paused that arrangement multiple times when outbreaks occurred.
