A man has been charged after allegedly using a weapon to attack a woman in a remote community in far north Queensland.

Police were called to a home in Aurukun about 9pm on Monday where they say they found the man, 37, assaulting the 51 year old woman.

Officers tasered the man and took him into custody.

He's since been charged with attempted murder and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with an offensive instrument.

He was refused police bail and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
