A man wanted over a brutal hammer assault in a Sydney hotel has been found in bushland and arrested.

The man was found at Lapstone in the Blue Mountains just before 5pm on Thursday.

He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, where he is assisting police with inquiries.

Police put out an alert for the 41-year-old on Wednesday after a woman was "seriously assaulted" in a Pitt Street Hotel.

Numerous reports said the woman was found in a room of the Primus Hotel by staff after being attacked with a hammer.

Detectives had said the man was believed to be carrying a firearm and to be in the Blue Mountains region.

Police had warned members of the public not to approach the man.
