Dashcam footage captures moment dog flies from ute onto busy Qld road

Dashcam footage has captured the shocking moment a dog was sent flying from a travelling ute onto a busy road in Far North Queensland.

Queensland woman Renee Oliver was left in shock after seeing the animal take a tumble from the moving ute while she was stopped at a roundabout near Cairns.

The footage, uploaded to social media earlier this month, shows the dog falling from the vehicle as it drives through the busy roundabout.

The animal slides for a few seconds before stopping on the road, amazingly landing on all fours.

Ms Oliver is seen on the footage approaching the stunned animal – which appears to have only suffered minor injuries – and putting it into her car.

She was able to track down the dog’s owner after catching up to him on the road.

“Lucky enough someone told him (the other driver) the dog was missing and I said, ‘Mate I’ve got your dog!’” Ms Oliver told 7 News.

“I think he was in shock himself, he didn’t realise the dog was actually out of the car.”

RSPCA statistics estimate 5000 dogs each year are injured or killed as a result of jumping from moving vehicles.

The organisation recommends using a pet harness or carrier to safely secure animals accompanying people while driving.

According to Harper Finch Lawyers, there is no law in Queensland requiring pets to be restrained while in the car; however, police can charge drivers if the animal interferes with their driving.
