Nine of the injured were taken to hospital by helicopter while the others were treated at the scene, near Schoenwald, 60km from Berlin.

The bus was on the way from Belgrade to Stockholm via Berlin.

The passengers were from various countries, with some from Sweden, Serbia and Israe as well as Germany, police said.

According to an emergency services spokesman, the accident was reported shortly before 10am on Friday.

Dozens of emergency service vehicles were called out as well as several rescue helicopters.

The coach was reported to have been travelling northwards towards Berlin.

The A13 motorway running from Berlin to Cottbus was initially closed off in both directions.

The southward route was later reopened.

Police were unable to say what the cause of the accident might have been.

The bus appeared to have struck guard rails running along the motorway and overturned.
