A garbage truck driver has been charged with dangerous driving, after a woman was hit and killed in Sydney's south-west.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Gurney Road and Woodlands Avenue in Chester Hill on Tuesday morning following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a garbage truck.

The female pedestrian died at the scene. She is yet to be formally identified.

The 32 year old driver was taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with: dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, disobeying a no right-hand turn sign, and not giving way to a pedestrian.

The Campbelltown man will appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday 11 March.
