An abandoned house in Piara Waters was deliberately set on fire early this morning, with the property’s roof already ablaze and partially collapsed by the time firefighters arrived.

Five crews made up of volunteer and career firefighters from Canning Vale, Armadale and Murdoch responded to calls from the public about 1.30am on Friday.

They arrived to find the derelict property on Warton Road engulfed in flames and parts of its burning roof caved in.

It took about 45 minutes for firefighters to bring the blaze under control, during which time WA Police, Western Power and ATCO also arrived at the single-storey home.

According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services the fire was deliberately lit, but further investigations into who sparked the blaze won’t be conducted because the residents had moved out of the property some time ago.

A police spokeswoman this morning said the cause was unknown but may have started as a rubbish fire.

She added that the home had been due to be demolished prior to the blaze.
