Smoke warning issued after large fire engulfs rubbish, machinery in Neerabup

An out-of-control rubbish and machinery fire which sent plumes of potentially dangerous smoke into the air and triggered a HAZMAT warning in Perth’s north has been contained.

A DFES spokesperson said firefighters managed to border the Neerabup blaze about 2.10pm - but added it could take up to four hours before it is actually brought under total control.

The fire spans an area of about 80m x 80m after taking hold in a rubbish yard. The cause of the blaze is at this point yet to be determined.

EARLIER: More than 20 fire crews are responding to the blaze in Neerabup, with Emergency WA alerting residents south and south-west of Flynn Drive in Neerabup, Carramar, Tapping and Banksia Grove to remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed.

As a precaution, air conditioners should also be switched off.

Emergency services were dispatched to the fire on Flynn Drive at 12.10pm after reports of heavy smoke in the area.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the large fire had engulfed both rubbish and machinery.

“The fire is resulting in potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a southerly direction,” the alert states.

“People may be impacted by smoke/fumes.”

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel at the scene.
