A 55-year-old man is fighting for life after suffering extensive burns to large parts of his body in a fire which engulfed a storage unit Perth’s north.

The man was rushed by paramedics to Fiona Stanley Hospital with severe burns to his legs, arms and torso at midday Monday shortly after fire crews were called to the Wangara storage unit.

He remains in a critical-but-stable condition.

How the blaze — which caused $500,000 damage — started is yet to be determined, but authorities have declared it accidental.

It is understood he was using powered cutting tools inside the storage unit before it ignited.

His screams could be heard from nearby industrial yards.

Hamza Belbaraka came rushing to the 55-year-old’s aid after hearing his cries for held, jumping over a fence to find the man already pouring water over himself.

“I was just outside and I saw a big fire and heard a man screaming for his life,” Mr Belbaraka told 7NEWS.

Mr Belbaraka added: “He was already dousing himself in water... and I told him to stay under the water.”

“I reassured him a little bit.. he wanted to get out but I told him to keep doing the water... and the ambulance came.

“He was burnt.. he was burnt all over. His upper body, his legs, his hands were completely burned his feet were burned.”

WorkSafe is investigating the fire.
