‘Heat is on’: Window to stop spread of polyphagous shot-hole borer closing as spring nears, experts warn

Arborists warn the window to stop the spread of a tiny destructive beetle wreaking havoc on Perth’s trees is closing, given it will thrive in the imminent warmer weather. The invasive polyphagous shot-hole borer has been less active in cooler winter weather, giving respite to teams tackling the outbreak — 24 degrees is the pest’s optimal temperature for reproduction. ArbWest committee member Joe Carriera said many in the sector questioned if a more proactive tree-cutting campaign should have been undertaken over winter. “Once we start getting into spring and it’s getting warmer, they’ll just multiply at an extreme rate. Everyone is extremely concerned,” he warned. More than 3000 trees have been cut, mulched, and treated at a Jandakot facility since the borer was first detected in WA in 2021. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development deputy director general Mia Carbon said trees had been actively removed where necessary across 25 affected council areas. The City of Armadale has also been added to what is now an 871sqkm quarantine area, with two infested coral trees in Bedfordale removed this week. “As the weather warms up, it may become easier for the community to see signs of PSHB damage. (The department) encourages everyone to be on the lookout,” Dr Carbon said. The borer — first detected in California in 2003, and then in Hawaii, Israel, South Africa and then in Argentina last year — tunnels into trees and farms a fungus to host its young, which blocks water and nutrients flow, ultimately killing the tree. There is no known cure. Californian researchers have since found extreme temperatures, below 15C and above 30C, slowed the beetle’s ability to reproduce and fight new trees — making spring and autumn the pest’s preferred seasons. “PSHB does not tolerate extreme temperature, so we do not expect the outbreak to expand significantly over summer,” Dr Carbon said. Healthy trees are preferred but those stressed from drought, root damage or overwatering can be more susceptible. Mr Carriera warned that if Perth did not get on top of the issue, “it could take generations to see the same level of tree canopy cover”. He said Perth’s dry summers and decreasing water table were already impacting the mortality rates of replanted sapling trees across councils. “One of the big questions has been what’s the strategy? There’s got a bit more transparency with what’s actually happening and what the game plan is,” he said. “There needs to be a conversation happening now because that’s a lot of trees to replace and where are we going to get them from? Tree nurseries need to get ahead now.” Despite almost 200 Hyde Park trees being earmarked for removal earlier this year, the cutting program has been delayed due to lengthy Department approvals. City of Vincent mayor Alison Xamon said the council was now reviewing its plan after a recent audit found the infestation level of some trees was lower than first thought. More than 60 volunteers from ArbWest, councils and the department, assessed several trees and collected prevalence data last Saturday. More will be undertaken next Saturday. “Anecdotal evidence from the first inspection day suggests the three trees inspected had lower levels of infestation,” Cr Xamon said. Dr Carbon said approvals have since been passed and the department would work with council on its revised plan. A tree removal and pruning program in Kings Park earlier this year showed a “significant drop in PSHB presence” in traps along the Mt Eliza Escarpment, Ms Carbon said. WA Botanic Garden director Sue McDougall told ABC this week 118 plants had so far been removed from the park, of which 69 were confirmed to have the pest and the rest had been in proximity to an infested tree. She said cutting back had reduced the pest load recorded in nearby traps.
