Geraldton came so close it could almost touch gold, but in the end had to settle for silver in the 2022 GWN7 Top Tourism Town Awards.

The Mid West capital’s win cements it as a popular holiday destination on the rise, with its submission focusing on the wealth of family friendly and thrilling activities on offer in and around the city.

It lost out to Mandurah, which won gold, while the bronze was awarded to Esperance.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn congratulated everyone involved.

“We have some amazing holiday destinations in WA, so the competition is always very tight,” he said.

“Our congratulations to Mandurah for taking out the top gong.

“I would also like to thank everyone who voted for Geraldton — it allowed us to claim silver. I challenge everyone to increase their voting efforts next year so we can secure gold.”

The winners, which won a share of $40,000 in TV advertising, were announced at the 2022 Perth Airport WA Tourism Conference Dinner on Wednesday.

Exmouth won the small tourism town category, while Denham was named winner in the new category of tiny tourism town.

More than 6700 people voted for their favourite tourism towns.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said all the winners had displayed an exceptional commitment to delivering high-quality visitor experiences.

They will now represent WA at the national awards.

The Top Tourism Town Awards have been running for more than 30 years, honouring cities and towns for their dedication to tourism and providing innovative experiences and facilities.
