Round five of the Katanning Netball Association A-grade competition had top-two teams Kojonup and Allstars walk off winners despite strong challenges from Dumbleyung and Olympians.

Kojonup defeated Dumbleyung by a confident 25-point margin in the first A-grade game of the day on Saturday at the Katanning Leisure & Function Centre.

Both teams started well, pushing hard early to make it an even game, and Kojonup finished with a slim four-goal advantage by the first change.

However, Kojonup showed their class in the second, with Sheridan Kowald shooting three goals to get things started before Dumbleyung could muster a reply, widening Kojonup’s leading margin to eight goals by halftime.

Kowald and Nadine Milne were at their best in the circle for Kojonup, netting a combined 14 goals in the third term and 17 in the final quarter to give Kojonup a healthy 25-goal winning margin by the final whistle, with final scores 58-33.

Allstars also notched a crushing victory over Olympians, the ladder leaders defeating Olympians 60-26.

The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game, with Allstars shooters Lara Rodney and Zoe Keley shooting a combined 16 goals while defenders Joedele Bolton and Joshiquwa Wynne worked hard at the other end to confine Olympians to three goals.

Olympians managed eight goals in the second quarter and nine in the third, but Allstars had found their stride, and were 21 goals ahead by the end of the third term.

Allstars added another 19 goals to their hall in a fierce final quarter, confining Olympians to only six to finish with scores at 60-26.

In the A-reserves, Olympians defeated Broomehill 45-39, making a fast start to finish the first half with a five-goal lead.

Broomehill kept pushing through the third term, narrowing the margin to three goals with a quarter left to play, but Olympians got the upper hand in the final term and walked off winners.

Kia Ora and Olympians were the round five winners in the B-grade, with Kia Ora defeating Dumbleyung 48-20, and Olympians and Cardinals Fever playing a close game with Olympians to prevail 28-25.

Cardinals made the better start, netting six goals to Olympians’ three in the first term, but Olympians pushed hard in the second and scores were even until Cardinals’ Hallee Beeck shot two back to back in the final seconds of playing time to put Carindals two goals ahead at halftime.
