Penny Squibb and Hockeyroos prepare for opening game of Commonwealth Games campaign in Birmingham

The Hockeyroos will be out to back up their medal performance at the recent FIH Women’s World Cup when the 2022 Commonwealth Games start in Birmingham on Thursday.

Tambellup hockey star Penny Squibb was part of the Australia’s bronze medal winning outfit in Spain this month and now the side have their sights set on a Commonwealth Games medal.

The Commonwealth Games begins with the opening ceremony on Thursday and competition wraps up on Monday, August 8.

Squibb claimed her first major international medal when the Hockeyroos came from behind to beat Germany in the bronze medal match of the World Cup on July 18.

The 29-year-old will play an important part in the Hockeyroos’ defence again, as they tackle pool B at the Commonwealth Games containing sides from New Zealand, South Africa, Scotland and Kenya.

The Hockeyroos start their campaign against Kenya on Saturday before facing South Africa on Sunday.

The big clash of their qualifiers is expected to come against New Zealand on Tuesday and the Hockeyroos round out their pool games when they face Scotland on Wednesday.

The semifinals of the tournament will be played on Friday, August 5 and the gold and bronze medal games will be on Sunday, August 7.
