The Shire of Jerramungup’s best and brightest came together on January 26 to receive awards honouring their valuable contributions to the community.

Sporting stalwart Alison Hocking, young fundraiser and multi-code athlete April Langdon, Boxwood Hill skipper Hayden Richter, and fall-prevention program Stay On Your Feet were named recipients of the four awards.

Shire chief executive Martin Cuthbert said it was nice to celebrate key members of the community.

“It was great to see people catching up, welcoming visitors and recognising individuals and groups who contribute so much to our shire,” he said.

Winners of the citizen of the year, community group of the year, junior sportsperson of the year and senior sportsperson of the year awards were announced at a ceremony at Jerramungup Sports Oval.

Ms Hocking was recognised as Jerramungup’s citizen of the year for her contribution to local sport and community over the last 10 years.

This year she served as president of the Boxwood Hill Netball Club, secretary of the Boxwood Hill Tennis Club, and as umpire co-ordinator and committee member for the Boxwood Hill Combined Sports Club and the Ongerup Netball Association.

The community group of the year award was given to the Stay On Your Feet program for their contribution to the health, safety and wellbeing of the community.

Led by Barbara Thomas, the program aims to support older community members to remain active, confident and independent.

Multi-code athlete Langdon was awarded junior sportsperson of the year for her dedication and prowess at netball, football, basketball, hockey, swimming, athletics and cross-country, as well as her commitment to local clubs by always lending a hand and taking part in fundraising and club events.

The title of senior sportsperson of the year was awarded to Richter for his commitment and leadership at the Boxwood Hill Football Club over the last 10 years.

The award recognised the dedication of the Boxwood captain, who was said to be respected both on and off the field by teammates, officials and supporters.

Mr Cuthbert said the awards highlighted the strength of community contribution across the shire.

“Congratulations to all those nominated for an Australia Day Award and to the recipients in each category,” he said.

“Being nominated is an achievement in itself, and our community is fortunate to have so many dedicated and talented people.”
