St Johns Ambulance volunteer recognised for 55 years of service to Great Southern town

A Kojonup man has been recognised for an incredible 55 years of volunteering with St John Ambulance across the region.

Brian Savory, 72, has been awarded a lifetime association certificate for his commitment to serving the community for more than half a century.

During his school years, Mr Savory was a part of the first Kojonup Scout Group where he completed a senior first-aid course.

At only 15 years of age Mr Savory joined Kojonup St John Ambulance, working the night shifts on the road as a senior first-aid volunteer.

He later served as an ambulance driver alongside his daytime job at a butcher shop.

Mr Savory was also a member of the Kojonup Volunteer Bushfire Brigade for 40 years, where he was named as the fireman of the year in 1988 and 1989.

He was an active member of many sporting clubs throughout Kojonup, most prominently football, basketball, speedway and bowling, and was the Shire of Kojonup’s citizen of the year in 1983.

For 15 years, he held the position of secretary of Kojonup St John, after becoming a life member in 1983, earning the serving brother medal in 1991 and the officer brother medal in 1996.

Mr Savory continues to volunteer for St John. He still lives in his home in Kojonup to this day.

“In a little town it is good to give back to the community,” he said.
